If you are building an AI product and trying to keep infrastructure costs down, RunPod and Vast.ai are probably the two names you keep seeing. Both offer GPU compute at a fraction of what AWS or Azure charge. But they work differently, price differently, and suit different workloads. Here is an honest breakdown.
What each provider actually is
RunPod is a managed GPU cloud platform. You rent GPU instances, they handle the infrastructure, and you get a consistent experience close to what you would expect from a traditional cloud provider. It is straightforward to get started and the interface is clean.
Vast.ai is a GPU marketplace. You are renting compute from a network of hosts, some of which are verified datacenters and some of which are individual operators with spare hardware. The cheapest listings come from unverified hosts, and that price difference reflects a real reliability trade-off.
The price comparison
Vast.ai rates vary by listing and change with supply and demand, so compare live offers rather than a single number. RunPod's pricing page lists H100 PCIe at $2.89 per hour and H100 SXM at $3.99 per hour (read 18 October 2026), and we break the full list down in RunPod pricing explained. A lower listed price is only part of the picture until you factor in what that cheaper price actually means in practice.
On unverified Vast.ai hosts the effective cost is higher than the listed rate once you account for downtime and failed runs. For short experimental jobs that is manageable. For a production workload running overnight or longer, the instability of cheap unverified hosts can wipe out the savings quickly.
Vast.ai's datacenter-verified hosts are the closer comparison to a managed provider. Filter for them, compare the live H100 offers with RunPod's list rate, and if the gap is small the comparison becomes much more about features and fit than raw cost.
Reliability and uptime
RunPod has had outages affecting customers, as most providers do. Like any provider it has had outages, so check its status page history. Popular GPUs like H100s and A100s can be fully allocated during peak demand periods, meaning you cannot always get the hardware you need when you need it.
Vast.ai datacenter hosts have a strong reliability track record. If you handle sensitive data, check Vast.ai's security page for its current certifications and what they cover.
Beyond the GPU rate - what else to factor in
Most comparison articles stop at the hourly GPU rate. Before you commit to either provider check the following. What does object storage cost and is it included or charged separately? What egress fees apply when you move data out? What regions are available and does either provider have infrastructure in the EU if you have GDPR obligations? These costs can meaningfully change the total bill and vary significantly between providers.
Which one should you use
Use Vast.ai if you are running short experimental jobs, your workload can tolerate occasional interruptions, and you want the lowest possible entry cost. Stick to verified datacenter hosts if you need any level of consistency.
Use RunPod if you want a more managed experience, your workload needs to run reliably for extended periods, or you are moving from prototype to early production and need something predictable.
For new users RunPod currently offers $5 in free credits when you spend your first $10, which makes it a low risk way to test the platform before committing. Both platforms are worth having an account on. Start with Vast.ai for experimentation and RunPod for anything that needs to be reliable.
