AWS vs specialist GPU cloud: what builders actually give up
24 March 2026
If you are building an AI product, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud is often the first place you look, because you already have an account or the free credits are attractive. That can be the right call. It is still worth comparing against a specialist GPU cloud before you commit, because the two are built for different jobs.
Why hyperscalers dominate the conversation
Hyperscalers are familiar. If your app, database and storage already live there, adding GPU compute keeps everything in one place, on one bill, with the permissions you already set up. If you have startup credits, the real cost to you may be lower than the list price suggests.
What a hyperscaler charges you for
Hyperscalers are built to serve every kind of workload, from file storage to large managed services. That breadth is part of what you are paying for, including on GPU instances. Specialist GPU clouds do less, and for a team that only needs GPU time that is often a feature: simpler setup and simpler pricing.
On a hyperscaler, GPU instances may also need quota requests and extra configuration before you can start. Check how long that takes for the GPU you want.
How to compare fairly
Compare the same GPU model and memory size, the same type of billing (on demand with on demand), and the same region where it matters. Include storage and the data you expect to move out, because egress rules differ a lot between providers.
Do not compare a hyperscaler list price with a marketplace's lowest listing. They are different products. The calculator shows the stored rate for each provider and the date it was collected, which gives you a consistent starting point. Treat the result as a first estimate and confirm on each provider's pricing page.
Egress and where your data lives
Moving data out of a hyperscaler can cost money, and that cost grows with the amount you move. If your GPU job reads from storage in one place and writes results to another, work out where the data has to travel. Sometimes keeping GPU compute next to the data is worth a higher hourly rate. Sometimes moving the job is cheaper overall.
When to stay on a hyperscaler
Stay if your data and services already live there and moving them would cost more than you would save, if you have credits that cover your usage, or if you need a compliance feature that a smaller provider does not offer. Move or add a specialist provider if your GPU job is self contained, such as training from a dataset you can copy or serving a model from a container.
You do not have to choose one. Many teams keep their app on a hyperscaler and rent GPU time elsewhere. Our guides to Azure GPU pricing alternatives and GCP GPU pricing alternatives go through what to check on each.
